A double short non-fat latte, three-quarters full… please.

That, if you don’t speak fluent Starbucks, means a small milky coffee, made with two shots of espresso and skimmed milk. Er, three-quarters full.

More importantly, especially for Starbucks workers asked to make one, it’s the boss’s drink of choice.

Howard Schultz, who turned Starbucks from a tiny coffee roasting outfit into a global empire, gets through five a day.

It’s only fitting that he drinks the stuff himself – after all, this is the man who made the world think that it’s OK to spend up to £3 on a cup of coffee.

Coffee’s already been proven to reduce the risk of various cancers, heart disease and Alzheimer’s, and now new research has found Parkinson’s disease is yet another condition regular consumption can protect against.

A review of all the available data conducted by scientists from the University of Porto, Portugal, found that dinking two to three cups a day can reduce the risk of acquiring the debilitating neurological disease by up to a quarter.

That figure fell to 15% when the researchers looked only at women. There was also a direct link between the amount of coffee consumed and the extent of protection conferred, with only those drinking several cups a day gaining the full 25% reduction in risk.

Although the protective properties of coffee had been suggested before the evidence proved conflicting.

This latest research collated information from 26 different published studies in drawing its conclusions.

According to the researchers, the study “confirms an inverse association between caffeine intake and the risk of PD, which can hardly by explained by bias or uncontrolled confounding.”

Coffee tasting in Kona – no spitting necessary

Espresso Essential - Coffee tasting

There are no spit buckets. The tasting rooms are decidedly non-Mediterranean. And—thankfully—not once did I need to endure a single Venturi sales pitch. I managed, however, to hear the word “terroir” used at least once in casual conversation. After a day of coffee tasting in Hawaii, I learned that when it comes to coffee tasting there are just as many differences as there are similarities compared to wine tasting.

While you don’t need to worry about a designated driver, you may want to consider assigning a designated listener. After an afternoon of pumping caffeine, the propensity to verbalize, ad-hoc increasing exponentially. Did I tell you about…? Did you know this little known fact…? When I was a kid growing up… I grew up down the street from John Lennon… Where did you buy those sunglasses…?

Coffee and olive oil fighting fat

DRINKING a cup of coffee fortified with olive leaf extract has the potential to combat obesity, new Australian research suggests.

The study, the first to show that olive leaf extract reduced fat stores in rats, was conducted by scientists at the University of Southern Queensland and was published in the American Journal of Nutrition.

Human trials to be conducted by dietitians at the University of Queensland will be completed this year.

The olive leaf is the latest super nutrient to be the focus of intense scientific study as well as eager exploration of its commercial potential.
